Board Takes Disciplinary Action in Use of Medical Lasers

A very interesting and relevant artice was published in the “Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine Newsletter – Summer 2007.”

The article stated that “Lasers that are used on human tissue for any purpose … are classified by the FDA as medical lasers.” The article goes on to say that “… a medical examination by a physician competent in dermatology is recommended prior to … the procedure.”

The Pennsylvania State Medical Board has taken action against a non-physician who offered laser treatment for hair removal at his “spa” that resulted in second-degree burns to the patient.

The article indicates that “If there are laser centers and spas providing services without proper prior medical examination and physician involvement, they would likely be susceptible to claims of unauthorized practice of medicine.”

The entire article can be read at the PA DOS website.

At ADVANCED SKIN CARE, ALL laser treatments are provided in the office of a Board Certified Dermatologist, by licensed professionals thoroughly trained in the use of medical lasers.
