The vertical lines between the eyebrows are the result of repeated action of the muscles of facial expressions. After years of squinting, frowning and exposure to sun, deep wrinkles are formed in the skin between the eyebrows. They are present even when the face is relaxed, making you appear angry even though youre not. Once BOTOX® has immobilized themuscles for several weeks, most (if not all) lines between the eyebrows may disappear. Other muscles such as those needed to raise the eyebrows are not affected so natural expression is maintained. BOTOX® has also been frequently used in crows feet at the corners of the eyes and the horizontal lines across the forehead. BOTOX® cannot be used on the smile lines or folds around the mouth.
A very small needle is needed to inject BOTOX® and discomfort is minimal as only a few drops are needed. Usually there is little to no immediate sign of treatment. It generally takes about two weeks for the full effect. The sensation in the skin at the treated site is not affected, only the ability to wrinkle the brows.
Generally after three to eight months, the voluntary action of the muscle will return but many patients lose the habit of frowning thus preventing the lines from reforming.
