Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about the procedures, treatments or services that we provide?

Below are answers to Frequently Asked Questions. For questions related to skin conditions or treatments, click here.

  • Why should I choose to go to a BOARD CERTIFIED dermatologist?
    • A dermatologist, Board Certified by the American Academy of Dermatology, is THE expert in diagnosing and treating conditions of the skin, hair and nails.

You should check to see if the doctor you intend to see is Board Certified by the American Academy of Dermatology.

  • How often should I visit a dermatologist?
    • To avoid serious skin conditions, including cancer, you should have an annual check of all your moles or at any time you are suspicious of changes in a growth on your skin.

  • How well do the acne, wrinkle and aging products I see advertised on TV Infomercials work?
    • Over-the-counter creams and lotions, such as those often seen on TV, are not usually comparable to the physician-grade products available in a dermatology practice.

Often, when buying highly advertised over-the-counter products, which may be effective for mild conditions, one is paying more for advertising and packaging than the active ingredients in the products.

  • What is our “Boutique Medical Spa”?
    • We are an exclusive Spa offering customized services, where all Spa staff are trained and supervised by a Board Certified Dermatologist.

As an integral part of a cosmetic dermatology practice, the highest standards of customer service and cleanliness are provided, while offering the luxury and comfort of the most sumptuous spas.

  • Is LASER treatment painful?
    • Many patients describe the feeling of a LASER as a slight pin prick or snapping of a rubber band against the skin. Our LASERS have a cooling element built into the wand to provide additional comfort and safety.

ADVANCED SKIN CARE & LASER CENTER offers topical and oral medications to decrease any discomfort, if needed.

  • When should I wear sunblock?
    • Daily! Apply sunblock every morning, regardless of the weather report.

  • Does higher SPF actually provide better sun protection?
    • Yes. A 15 SPF may provide up to 90% protection. Higher SPFs can provide up to 98% protection.

A minimum SPF of 30 is recommended. Look for sunblocks containing micronized zinc or titanium.

  • Is use of a tanning bed safer than tanning under the sun?
    • NO. In fact, tanning beds are more damaging than the sun and increase the risk of wrinkles, brown spots and dangerous skin cancers.

We recommend Premium Sunless Tan products, available at Advanced Skin Care, for a year round glow.

  • Is adult acne different from teenage acne?
    • Not at all. ADVANCED SKIN CARE & LASER CENTER treats acne in patients ranging from pre-adolescence to post-retirement.

  • Is Accutane a safe treatment for acne?
    • Absolutely. Isotretinoin, the generic name for Accutane, Amnesteem, Sotret, and Claravis, is perfectly safe when prescribed and monitored by a Board Certified Dermatologist.

  • Is LASER Hair Removal permanent?
    • LASER Hair Removal offers permanent reduction of hair and is, by far, the most effective option for reducing hair in men, women, teens and children.

  • Why are some services covered by insurance and some are not?
    • Insurance companies do not typically cover preventive treatments to maintain healthy skin. Most preventative and cosmetic procedures are considered not medically necessary by insurance companies.

  • How do I recognize Skin Cancer?

    • Follow the ABCs of Skin Cancer, by looking for one or more of these features in any mole:

      Asymetry
      Border irregularity
      Color changes
Diameter larger than a pencil eraser

A Board Certified Dermatologist is THE expert in recognizing and removing early skin cancers, reducing risk for their patients.

  • an Skin Cancer be cured?
    • Yes. Most skin cancers can be cured if diagnosed and treated early.
Prevention is the most effective cure.

  • Can stretch marks, scars and tattoos be removed?
    • Yes. There are various factors, such as duration and color that determine whether total removal or improvement is possible. A consultation with a cosmetic Board Certified Dermatologist is necessary to determine the optimal treatment methods, including LASERS, for you.
