The Importance of Having Your Injections Performed by a Board-Certified Dermatologist

board-certified dermatologist

No one would consider performing a surgical procedure on themselves at home without any medical training. However, time and time again we read reports of people who feel that it is okay to inject themselves with nonsurgical cosmetic products. What these people fail to realize is that having injections performed by anyone who is not a board-certified dermatologist can be very risky. It can leave you with a disfigured face and a whole host of unwanted side effects that can last for a very long time.

Trying to inject yourself with nonsurgical cosmetic products is such an unnecessary risk. One of the reasons why this is dangerous is because beauty treatment products, be them dermal fillers or BOTOX®, can come with extremely serious side effects if they are administered by an unqualified provider.

For example, let’s look at BOTOX®. BOTOX® is a neuromodulator that is injected into your muscles with the goal of relaxing them, thereby preventing the formation of certain types of wrinkles. If you inject it in the wrong area, you can cause your face to become droopy. What’s worse is that if you get this product in a vital organ, it can lead to sickness, and in some cases, death. Some people who have tried to inject themselves with BOTOX® have been left with swallowing difficulties, damaged eyesight, and speech impediments.

These same difficulties exist when trying to inject yourself or having a friend inject you with dermal fillers. First, dermal fillers are only supposed to be sold to licensed healthcare practitioners. Unfortunately, some people have found a way to purchase these products online. But if you purchase a product online that legally is only supposed to be sold to medical professionals, what guarantee do you have that the product you are purchasing is actually what it is supposed to be?

Some who have tried to self-inject or have allowed unqualified people inject them with dermal fillers are left with horrible allergic reactions, infection, flu-like symptoms, and permanent disfigurement. Once the injection is put into your body, it can’t just be taken out.

It is equally important to make sure that you receive your injections from a qualified, board-certified dermatologist instead of someone posing as one. It all comes down to the knowledge behind the needle. Patients seeking cosmetic advice and treatment should carefully and thoroughly research the credentials, experience, results (before & after photos), etc. of anyone who is going to inject them with neuromodulators (i.e., BOTOX) and/or dermal fillers.

Why would one go to a non-board certified doctor/nurse/PA for treatment of their skin? There are other-specialty MD’s and DO’s (Family Doctors, OB-GYNs, etc.) and even Dentists and Podiatrists performing these cosmetic treatments! Not to mention Nurses and Aestheticians!

For this reason, it is imperative that you only have injections performed by a board-certified dermatologist. Dr. Comite has the training and experience needed to administer the injection in a proper way, at a proper dose, and with the best chance of having the best results. Most of the risks that come with injectables all but disappear when they are administered by a board-certified dermatologist.
