Dr. Comite is now offering Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a non-surgical, highly effective treatment, to patients with acne, rosacea, sun damage or skin cancers. A topical photosensitizing agent, Levulan®, is applied to the skin, then activated with light. Levulan® is absorbed only by certain structures of the skin, such as oil glands, bacteria or rapidly growing cells.
Illumination with light causes a reaction in the skin, resulting in the destruction of the targeted tissue. Surrounding healthy tissue is unaffected. With acne, PDT decreases the bacteria on the skin by shrinking the oil-producing sebaceous glands.This treatment is an excellent alternative for patients with severe acne who do not want to take Accutane. PDT also rejuvenates the skin – improves fine lines and scars, increases collagen, tightens and firms the skins surface and reduces pore size.
