What is Rosacea?

Rosacea

Rosacea is a disease that affects the skin. In most people, it affects their facial skin. The condition is not life-threatening. However, for individuals who are suffering from it, it does drastically disrupt their life. This is because the flare-ups come and go.

Most people do not get rosacea as children or as teenagers. It usually starts during the middle part of life, somewhere around the age of 30. Some of the first places that you’re going to see it are going to be on your cheeks or on your nose, or you might start to see indications of the disease on your chin and forehead. Again, these outbreaks are going to appear and go away sporadically.

Just because rosacea occurs most commonly in the face does not mean that it is limited to the face. There are some people who are suffering with the disease on their scalp, on their chest and on their neck. This is a disease that often gets progressively worse. If you’re suffering from rosacea, it becomes more persistent with time. For many people, what makes the disease so troublesome is that it leads to the appearance of blood vessels on the skin.

If a person does not get treatment for their condition, they are likely to develop dimples or bumps on their skin. With time, and if the treatment is not successful, a person may notice that their nose becomes bulbous, swollen or bumpy. This is a result of the excess tissue that is growing on their nose.

Rosacea does not respect race or skin color. That being said, more people have it with lighter skin than with darker skin. Rosacea is seen more commonly in people who flush easily or who blush easily. Interestingly, the condition happens less commonly in women and more commonly in men. In fact, when you look at the whole gamut of rosacea patients, those who have the worst symptoms are usually male.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for rosacea. However, there are current medical therapies available at Advanced Skin Care & Laser Center that an individual can use in order to minimize some of the symptoms they experience. By visiting our office in Wyomissing, you can get answers to your questions about rosacea as well as get the treatment that you need to keep your skin looking its best for longer periods of time.
